Women's Tennis - Mon, Apr. 2, 2012

The Seminole State College Women's tennis team traveled to Mississippi and Florida over spring break for four dual matches against some of the top Junior College women's teams in the nation.

First up, the Ladies traveled to Meridian, Mississippi for a dual against Meridian Community College on Sunday, March 18th. The Lady Trojans started off well, picking up two of the three doubles matches winning at #1 doubles 8-3 and at #3 doubles 8-6. Seminole and Meridian would split the six singles matches; taking three each giving Seminole the team win 5-4. Singles winners for SSC were Chloe Murphy, Taylor Spradlin, and Steffy Paez. Brittany Burrell nearly pulled out a fourth win, but lost in a third set super tie-breaker 12-10.

After leaving Meridian, the team traveled to Orlando, Florida for the 2012 Spring Break Sports tournament, which is in its tenth year. Matches were played all over the Orlando area. SSC would face off against three of Florida's best Junior College women's teams: State College of Florida-Manatee Sarasota, St. Petersburg College, and Florida State College Jacksonville.

The first match in Orlando was againste the current #2 ranked team, State College of Florida Manatee Sarasota on Tuesday, March 20th. The Trojans started off a bit slow, and were out matched at the start. The #2 doubles team of Brittany Burrell and Trevine Sellier fell 8-4, and the #3 doubles team of Ashley Coleman and Steffy Paez fell 8-2. In the #1 doubles match, Chloe Murphy and Taylor Spradlin put up a fight and had a great match, but went down 8-6. This really put the Lady Trojans in a hole, going down by a score of 3-0 entering Singles. In singles play, Seminole showed a lot of fight, picking up two out of the six singles matches with wins by Steffy Paez and Taylor Spradlin. Chloe Murphy also lost a super tight match at #1 singles, losing in a third set super tiebreaker.

The second match versus the current #3 rank team in NJCAA, St. Petersburg College on Wednesday, March 21st. After a long rain delay and pushing water off courts, the match did not start until around 5:30 pm and the Lady Trojans came out sluggish. All three doubles matches started off seeing SSC down, but at the #1 doubles match and #3 doubles match SSC came back to nearly pull them out, finally losing both by a score of 8-6. Once again SSC would enter singles down 3-0. In singles play, Seminole was only able to pick up one win, getting a win by Taylor Spradlin, and losing the dual match 8-1.

The final match in Orlando saw the Lady Trojans picking up a win over Florida State College Jacksonville, who finished #5 in NJCAA last year. This time around, SSC would pick up momentum and get two out of the three doubles matches, winning at #2 doubles 8-6 and easily at #3 doubles 8-1. The teams would once again split the singles matches, winning three each, putting Seminole State on top 5-4 as the final dual match score.

Head coach Brian Nelson said, "Heading into this Spring Break trip, I knew we were going to face some of the best teams in JUCO. Although we lost two matches out there, I feel we competed really hard and showed we can compete with almost anyone. We had some bad luck injuries here and there that could have gave us a shot at doing even better. Against State College of Florida Manatee Sarasota, who is the current #2 ranked team, we fought really hard in singles. If we had pulled off a couple of those tie break wins, we could have even lost 5-4! I have a good feeling about this women's team and know we are improving each time out. If we keep on this pace, we will be hard to play against. The wins over Meridian and Jacksonville were awesome, as they are both very good teams year in and year out. The ladies won't get much rest though, as we have four duals right after Spring Break so we need to heal and rest up fast."
