GREAT BEND, Kansas - The Seminole State Trojans made their first mark on the season just the way they intended, undefeated. SSC traveled to Barton County Community College where they faced Cisco Junior College in their opening match. The Trojans jumped out to a solid start beating the Wranglers 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.
The final match of Friday evening had the Trojans facing tournament host Barton County Community College. Barton County is ranked among others receiving votes in the NJCAA national polls. Despite the Cougar crowd and home court advantage, the Trojans came out on top 26-24, 25-20, 25-10. "The game against Barton was one we really wanted," said Head Coach Amy Gillespie. "I used to be an assistant coach there, and Kara Robeson (the Trojan's assistant) used to play there. Not only that, but it was a great way for us to face a tough team and to really start to make our mark. It was a fun environment to compete in and our girls played well."
The Trojans opened Saturday's play against Air Force Prep. SSC picked up their third win of the tournament 25-17, 25-8, 25-19. Their final match of the tournament was against Northern Oklahoma College of Enid. The Trojans handled NOC with ease as they picked up the win 25-12, 25-14, 25-11.
"It was great to pick up four wins to start the season," said Coach Gillespie. "We got a chance to see where we needed work but saw a lot of good things as well."
The Trojans have their home opener on Tuesday, as they take on Brookhaven College. The Bears have won the NJCAA DIII National Championship for the past two years and are currently ranked first in the NJCAA DIII polls. "It should be a great match to watch," said Coach Gillespie. "We encourage everyone in the community to come and watch our girls in action!"
