Over the weekend, The number Five (5) ranked Seminole State Tennis Men's and Women's teams had an opportunity to flex their muscle and did some positive things on the courts at the USTA/ITA NJCAA Regional Championships. Men's and Women's Head Coach Brian Nelson stated "We had been preparing as a team for the entire off-season for this event and they did not disappoint". Seminole State College Tennis, both Men's and Women's, won a championship in each division and qualified for The NJCAA National Championship to be held in Fort Myers, Florida in every division.
In what has been an impressive first half of the semester thus far, Freshman Vail Surduk (Russia) has been almost completely dominant in a Seminole State uniform. (Surduk) has been mowing down opponents at a blistering rate with his trademark blistering serve. Surduk won the USTA/ITA NJCAA Men's Regional Championships by the final tally of 5-7; 6-3; 6-3 in three sets over Spartak Rahachou of Johnson County Community College. "It was a good win and I am glad to be headed to Florida. Hopefully, I can improve and play some tough competition there" said Surduk.
On the Open Women's side of the draw, in a matchup of two returning Seminole State All-American's Helga Pinones (Spain) defeats Shawnee-Ann Brelsford (Australia) in the USTA/ITA NJCAA Regional Finals 6-4, 7-6 in straight sets.
"For me, being able to qualifiying for the NJCAA National Championships in Florida is such a big accomplishment, not just because of the accomplishment, but because of last year and not being able to compete because of a back injury. So it will be good to be able to represent Seminole State College at such a great event" said Sophomore Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff.
The doubles combination of All-American Tendai Tapfuma (Zimbabwe) and Vasil Surduk (Russia) showed their chemistry and completed a sweep of the Men's side of the draw. Tapfuma and Surduk easily coasted to an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory in the Doubles Championships against Seward County Community College to claim the Championship and qualify for The 2014 NJCAA National Championship to be held in Fort Myers, Florida.
Just the day before, The All-American duo teamed together to capture the 2013-2014 USTA/ITA NJCAA Regional Championship in the Open Doubles Division defeating Seward County Community College (Kansas) duo of Coyos and Lopez by the final score of 6-4; 6-2 in straight sets to claim the Regional championship for Seminole State College.
"Personally, I think it was a good event and we showed some positive things here this weekend. Hopefully, we can continue to improve and do well at Nationals" said Head Coach Brian Nelson.
