Seminole News
Sun, May 13, 2012 - [Baseball]
On the final day of the NJCAA Region II Division I Baseball Tournament, a game that got off to a great start ended in season-ending dissappointment for Seminole State's baseball team Sunday. Connors State took advantage of five SSC errors and defeated the Trojans 11-4 in the 1 pm elimination game at Jenks High School. With the loss, Seminole finishes their season with a record of 41-15 and an Oklahoma Collegiate Conference Co-Championship under their belts. Connors advanced to the Region II championship game vs. Eastern Oklahoma State played later Sunday.

Starting sophomore left-handed pitcher Ryan Wilson (Owasso, OK) held Connors scoreless in the top of the first and recorded two of his four stikeouts. In the bottom of the first, Josh Lavender (McDonough, GA) started the Trojan half of the inning with a bang when he hit a leadoff homerun to right field. Next up, sophomore shortstop Jose Olazagasti (Collinsville, OK) reached second base when the Connors centerfielder mishandled a well-hit drive to deep center field. Then with one out, Lucas Quary (Mt. Pleasant, TX) launched a two run homer to give the Trojan fans reason for optimism and a 3-0 lead.

With the aid of a Trojan error and a hit batsman Connors responded in the top of the second with two runs of their own on only one hit to make it a 3-2 game. This would be a recurring theme that ultimately spelled doom for Seminole. The Trojans brought in their last run of the game in the bottom of the third when a Horace Johnson base hit to left field drove home Lucas Quary who, two batters earlier, had doubled to the left field corner.

The fourth and fifth innings were nightmarish for the Trojans and their large supportive following. In the top of the fourth, Connors scored five times on only one hit as Seminole committed three errors and relinquished the lead for the first time. After the error assisted the fourth inning Connors rally, Seminole trailed 7-4. Freshman right-hander Billy Love (Fletcher, OK) replaced losing pitcher Ryan Wilson (5-4) on the mound to start the fifth inning and promplty gave up a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning. The Cowboys would score three more times in the fifth with the help of yet another Trojan error and another Connors homerun, this time a two run shot. Michael Bonner (Sugar Land, TX) came on in relief to finish the fifth and went the rest of the way for the Trojans pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing no runs and no hits while striking out five Cowboys.

Seminole continued to battle and produce base runners, but no runs the rest of the way. In fact, the Trojans out-hit Connors by a twleve to six tally, the various Trojan miscues being the difference in the game. Connors was also aided by a stellar performance by their left-handed reliever, Kyler Trumwell, who took the mound  in the fouth inning and held Seminole scoreless down the stretch.

After losing five straight games to Seminole this season including a hard fought second round loss yesterday, Eastern struck first in the top of the second when they connected for two solo home runs off of Seminole starter Cale Russell (Norman, OK). The Trojans answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to make it a 2-1 game. Frank Arena (Stillwater, OK) and  Ryan Wilson (Owasso, OK) both walked and Mictchell Osburn's (Broken Arrow, OK) RBI single to left filed scored Arena from second base. That would be the last offense the Trojans could muster for the game. Eastern's staff scattered four other hits without allowing another run through the end of the nine inning affair.

Cale Russell (1-2) absorbed the loss for the Trojans and pitched four complete innings giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Middle reliever Stephen Williams (Piedmont, OK) entered in the top of the fifth and surrendered two runs on three hits in an inning and a third of work. He struck out two and walked one before yielding to Matt Contreras (Grand Prairie, TX) in the sixth inning. Contreras ended an Eastern rally with a double play grounder to end the sixth and gave up one run on two hits the rest of the way. Eastern improved to 34-20 on the year and the Trojans fell to 41-14.

Seminole is now faced with having to defeat Connors and Eastern back to back to claim another Region II title and advance to South Central District play next weekend. Acting head coach, Brady Huston, said "We made some uncharacteristic mistakes for this time of year and they (Eastern) took full advantage. We are going to have to stay hooked up and play with a lot of energy tomorrow." The Trojans are a combined 9-2 this season against Connors and Eastern.

The Seminole State Trojan baseball team edged Eastern Oklahoma State 2-1 today in second round action at the 2012 NJCAA Region II Division I Baseball Tournament in Jenks, Oklahoma. Behind a sensational three-hit pitching peformance by Tyler Kruse (Broken Arrow) and a game-changing solo homerun by Cisco Factor (Yukon, OK), Seminole State advances to third round action Saturday without a loss. The Trojans will take on the winner of the early game on Saturday between the same Eastern team and Arkansas Baptist, who was defeated tonight by Rose State by a score of 20-6. The game will begin at 7 pm Saturday. To follow the Trojans online vist the Game Changer website: http://www.gamechanger.io/t/spring-2012/seminole-state-trojans-4eedc19c6c1a045149000003. In a radically different game from the Trojans' game on Thursday, Seminole's Tyler Kruse and Eastern's Logan Taylor locked horns in a pitchers' dual. Neither team could manage a base hit through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, Eastern registerd the first of its three hits it would get for the entire game with a sharply hit two-out base hit to centerfield. Kruse retired the next batter with a ground ball to end the inning without incident.

In the Seminole half of the innng, Cisco Factor connected for the Trojans' first hit when he smashed a solo homerun to right field with two outs. Justin Steelmon (Broken Arrow, OK) then followed with a base hit up the middle and Frank Arena (Stillwater, OK) earned a base on balls. Seminole second baseman Jon Davis (Tulsa, OK) then loaded the bases when he reached first on an Eastern throwing error. However, Ryan Wilson (Owasso, OK) struck out to end the promising two-out uprising.

The Trojans got what would come to be an all-important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With the score 1-0 in favor of Seminole, Jose Olazagasti walked and then stole second with two outs. Frank Arena hit a high chopper down the third base line and legged it out for an infield hit while Eastern's late throw from third base to first was off-target and got past the first baseman. This allowed Olazagasti to score and make it 2-0 going into the ninth inning.

After surrendering a two-out line drive home run to left field and a walk to the next batter, Kruse was pulled for Trojan closer Nick Pettus (Broken Arrow, OK). A fly ball to center field ended the game. For the game Kruse got the win to go 6-0 on the season. He pitched 8 2/3 innings giving up one run on three hits. He struck out seven and walked only two Mountaineers. Pettus recorded his tenth save of the year for his duty.  Eastern's Logan Taylor (4-1) absorbed the loss in spite of a stout three-hit performance of his own.

With the win Seminole improves to 41-13 on the season and Eastern drops to 33-20. The Trojans will now have three games to win two on Saturday and Sunday in order to advance to South Central District play next weekend.

The Seminole State Trojan baseball team brought home a 14-6 win over Connors State, its fourth win of the season over the Cowboys. The victory was earned during the first round of the 2012 NJCAA Region II Division I Baseball Tournament being held Thursday through Sunday in Jenks, Oklahoma. With the lopsided win, second seeded Seminole advances to play fourth seeded  Eastern Oklahoma State in second round winner's bracket action at 3:30 pm on Friday . Eastern defeated third seeded Rose State by a score of 9-6 in the first of three first-round games today. Trojan ace left-hander Billy Waltrip (Braggs, Oklahoma) got the start for Seminole but had control issues throughout his 4 1/3 innings of work. Acting head coach Brady Huston said after the game "Early in the game we weren't as sharp as you'd like to be on the mound, but our offense pushed a couple of runs across which took some pressure off."  Connors scored a run in the top of the first inning on one hit with the help of two Waltrip walks and a wild pitch. The Trojans aswered with some run production of their own in the bottom of the frame to take their first lead of the contest.  Jose Olazagasti (Collinsville, OK) started the rally with a one-out double to right-center field. Cisco Factor (Yukon, OK) moved Olazagasti to third with a base hit to left field. Factor drew an errant throw to second base while stealing during the next at  bat which allowed Olazagasti to score from third and even the score at one apiece. After Justin Steelmon (Broken Arrow, OK) lined out to right field, Frank Arena (Stillwater, OK) drove home the go-ahead run with the Trojan's second double of the inning to right-center field.

After a scoreless second inning, the only scoreless inning of the game, Connors pushed a run across in the top of the third to tie the game temporarily at 2-2. Similar to the first inning, the Trojans answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases with three walks, Jon Davis (Tulsa, OK) poked a grounder through the infield with two outs to bring home two runs and make it 4-2.

The fifth inning would prove to be the pivotal frame of the encounter. With the score 5-3 to start the Connor's half of the inning, Waltrip seemingly retired the first batter of the inning swinging on a pitch in the dirt. However, Trojan catcher Mitchell Osburn (Broken Arrow, OK)  failed to make the throw to first to record the put-out on the dropped third strike play and the Connors batter reached first with no out recorded. He then compounded the issue when Waltrip recorded his fifth strikeout against the next batter by throwing an off-target pick off attempt to first after strike three. The error allowed the Connors runner at first to advance to scoring position at second.  Coach Huston had seen enough when Waltrip walked the next batter for his seventh walk in four plus innings and pulled him in favor of right-handed reliever Michael Bonner (Sugar Land, TX).

Bonner then closed out the inning allowing a one-out bloop single to left that scored the leadoff hitter from second and thus concluded Waltip's pitching line. For the game, Waltrip pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and seven walks. After five and a half innings, Seminole was clinging to an increasingly tense 5-4 advantage. Frank Arena struck out looking to start the Trojan fifth. Jon Davis walked and Ryan Wilson (Owasso, OK) reached first and forced Davis to second when the Connors State third baseman mishandled his hard hit grounder toward the hole at short. With runners at first and second and one out, Horace Johnson (Raymore,MO) crushed a pitch over the left-centerfield fence for a three run homer to give Seminole an 8-4 lead it would never relinquish. The Trojans would score two more runs that inning on a run-scoring double by Olazagasti and an RBI single by Steelmon to make it 10-4.

From that inning on, the boys in blue flirted with rendering the game a run rule affair. The closest they would come would be in the eighth inning when after the score had ballooned to 13-5 in the seventh, they had the bases loaded with no outs. Unfortunately, they only managed to bring one run across that inning on a wild pitch due, in part, to some poor base running. Connors managed a solo home run in the top of the ninth off of Thursday's mop-up duty closer, Billy Love (Fletcher, OK).

Coach Huston applauded his pitching staff for their combined effort for the winning cause. "Our bullpen gave us quality innings and we executed late," said the young Trojan skipper. Bonner (2-0) was credited with the win and contributed 2 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits while recording three strikeouts. Matt Contreras (Grand Prairie, TX) set up the finish with a scoreless eighth inning allowing one hit and a walk, while registering a strikeout. Billy Love allowed one run, the solo home run, on two hits and a walk in the ninth to seal the victory.

Seminole will need to win at least four games this weekend to advance to the NJCAA South Central District playoffs next weekend. Today was an encouraging beginning for Trojan faithful.

After defeating Eastern Oklahoma State 8-3 and Connors State 6-0 in the first two rounds on Friday, Coach McSweeney sent Whitney Robinson to the circle for the all important winner's bracket contest. Robinson, a freshman from Choctaw, responded with a stunning performance that kept the Norse off-balance all afternoon. The only damage NEO could register on the day was a fourth inning grand slam, which was not enough combat the Trojan offense.

Aggressive Trojan hitters staked Seminole to an early lead by pushing three runs across in the top of the second, highlighted by Nikki Nail's two-run-scoring extra base hit to centerfield. Seminole scored a single run in the third and Chelsea Reeves stretched the lead to 5-0 with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. NEO responded with their grand slam to cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth. After the Trojans scored an insurance run in the top of the fifth, Robinson and some solid defense finished the job and brought home the win.

Coach McSweeney's squad needs only one win today to advance to district play next week and gets two tries to accomplish the task. The winner of next week's district play will advance to the NJCAA National Softball Tournament in St. George, Utah.

The Trojan baseball team earned another conference win today and clinched at least a tie for first place in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Rose State Raiders came to Oiler Park for game three of a four game series and went home with the loss by run rule, 15-4 after also being run ruled in game two by the Trojans 17-6. The Trojans will advance to post season play in the NJCAA Region II Tournament that begins on Thursday, May 10 in Jenks as either the number one or two seed, depending on the outcome of the NEO/Eastern game on Sunday. An Eastern win would give the Trojans the outright conference championship and the number one seed at the Region II Tournament. An NEO win on Sunday would make the Trojans conference co-champs and the number two seed in the tournament by virtue of a tie-breaker system that favors NEO.
